Soapbox Lecture Series: Realizing Empathy

What if realizing empathy was the driver/enabler for the creative process? For innovation? How would that affect the way you think about creativity? About educating students to be more creative? About managing organizations to promote innovation? About developing technology to foster creativity? Above all, about what it means to be human?

Realizing Empathy: An Inquiry into the Meaning of Making

Seung Chan (that’s his entire first name, which has a space) has nearly 15 years of experience spanning the disciplines of Computer Science, Human-Centered Design, and Visual/Performing Arts. What he has learned from integrating together his cross-disciplinary experiences is that realizing empathy is the heart of the creative process. His book Realizing Empathy: An Inquiry Into the Meaning of Making, was his first attempt at telling this story.

Starting October 13, he will embark on a tour around the east-coast of North America to share stories, ideas, and experiences intended to challenge our understanding of what empathy is and how it can benefit our lives, by reframing it through the lens of the creative process. Join us at MAYA Design on October 28, at noon as he makes his stop in Pittsburgh.
