Small Talks: Gaming and Archeology

John R. Clarke, Annie Laurie Howard Regents Professor in the Deparment of Art & Art History at the University of Texas, will demonstrate the navigable 3D model of a huge ancient Villa buried by Vesuvius and resurrected by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Oplontis Project. After three years' work with the King's Visualisation Lab, King's College London, and Project architects, the beta version of the model uses Unity, a first-person shooter gaming platform, to all a user to visit the villa virtually. He or she can also switch from the actual state of the Villa to accurate reconstructions of its rich frescoes and pavements, to change lighting conditions, and to access the Project's scholarly database, housed at the Texas Advanced Computational Center (TACC).
