Bridging Business and Design | Marketing

Bridging Business and Design is a series of case-study presentations/discussions which aims to demonstrate that for business purposes, good design is strategic design. Our focus is on sharing behind-the-scenes stories of successful collaborations on products, campaigns and branding. Some presentations include representatives from different areas of the business or organization.

Our next upcoming luncheon will focus on marketing. AIGA and AMA have partnered together to bring you high level executives from CNN and 22squared. It will be a panel discussion where insights will be shared from two very successful business/design teams on how they forge good partnerships and how good collaboration leads to better business results.

Richard Warner is founder and CEO of What's Up Interactive, an Atlanta based web and video marketing firm whose clients include AT&T, the Georgia Lottery, the Georgia Aquarium, the Coca-Cola Company and Holiday Inn. He is seen frequently as a business commentator on Fox5 WAGA.

He spent 30 years as a host and managing editor interviewing CEOs on "Georgia's Business" on the state's PBS network, as well as 20 years as a commentator on Atlanta's WXIA and WAGA TV. His daily radio commentaries were syndicated on more than 200 stations nationwide.

Richard has also moderated and hosted events for more than 50 organizations including Emory University, the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the State of Georgia and the Atlanta Press Club.

Robert Poulton (CNN):

Robert Poulton is currently Creative Directive-Design with CNN’s Marketing and on-air Promotion Department. Mr. Poulton is responsible for the on-air design of many major CNN promotional initiatives including Anderson Cooper 360°, Piers Morgan Tonight, CNN Politics - America’s Choice 2012 and others.

Before joining CNN in 2003, Mr. Poulton was a Senior Designer with ABC Television KGO-TV in San Francisco, Senior Designer at Global Television in Toronto, Canada and also the Principal Owner and Operator of Robert Poulton Design in Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Poulton has many years of design and marketing experience, including 15 years in television. Throughout his career Robert Poulton has been fortunate to receive 5 national Emmy® nominations and more than 50 broadcast design and promotion awards. Most notably a Broadcasting and Cable — Campaigns of distinction award for CNN=Politics which he art directed.

Mr. Poulton holds a Design Degree from one Canada’s premier Design and animation Schools—Sheridan College School of Craft and Design in Toronto, Canada and a Business and Marketing Post-Secondary Diploma from Seneca College, in Toronto, Canada.

Scot Safon
EVP, CNN
General Manager, HLN

Scot M. Safon is Executive Vice President, CNN Worldwide/General Manager, HLN, where he is responsible for the management of the HLN television and digital brands. HLN is the former CNN Headline News network and is home to some of the fastest-growing news and information programming on television, including MORNING EXPRESS with ROBIN MEADE, NANCY GRACE and DR DREW. In 2011, HLN and each of its programs set new audience records with the network’s coverage of the Casey Anthony trial, which resulted in the highest-rated month in HLN history. HLNtv.com launched in early 2012 and is one of the internet’s fastest-growing news destinations.

Prior to running HLN, Safon served as CNN Worldwide’s Chief Marketing Officer, overseeing marketing, promotion and branding campaigns on behalf of all CNN US, CNN International, CNN.com and HLN content and news coverage. His teams marketed and promoted the brand during CNN’s award-winning coverage of the 2008 and 2004 Presidential Elections, Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, the war in Iraq and the Southeast Asia Tsunami disaster. The group’s promotional campaign for the top-rated God’s Warriors was awarded the first-ever national Emmy Award for news tune-in promotion in 2007. Promax/BDA has honored Safon and his team for campaigns including Black in America, America Votes 2008 and Planet in Peril. Safon and his staff led the charge on CNN’s groundbreaking Inauguration Day partnership with Facebook, which resulted in CNN.com hosting the largest online live video event in internet history.

Prior to joining CNN in late 2002, Safon was senior vice president of marketing for Turner Network Television (TNT). He was a key member of the team that launched the network’s long-standing “We Know Drama” branding in June 2001.

Before joining TNT, Safon was in the ad agency world, handling campaigns for the CBS Television Network, working on campaigns for CBS Sports, CBS News and CBS International. He began his career as an account executive with D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Inc., developing advertising campaigns for national consumer brands, including Pampers, Pepto-Bismol and Kal Kan Foods.

Safon earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics and history from the University of Virginia and a master’s of business administration from Cornell University.

John Stapleton
EVP, Chief Creative Director (22 Squared)

John joined 22squared in 2000 after a four-year stint as senior art director at Fahlgren Advertising in Tampa. Prior to that he spent time as an art director at Henderson Advertising in Greenville, South Carolina. Having begun his career as a graphic designer, John applies diverse talents and experience to his current leadership role. Over the years, his work has been recognized by numerous industry publications, including The One Show, Communication Arts, Archive and Graphis. John’s brand experience: Dow Chemical, Florida Tourism, McDonald’s, Michelin, NAPA Auto Parts, and Ryobi Power Tools.

Curt Mueller
VP, Creative Director (22 Squared)

Curt began his career as a small fish in a very large pond, starting as a junior
copywriter at Ogilvy New York in 1999. For 8 years he worked on clients such
as American Express, Kodak, Miller Brewing, and the New York Mets. After
learning and experiencing much on both the traditional and nontraditional sides
of advertising, he struck out on his own, freelancing for agencies across the
country. In 2008 he returned to his hometown of Atlanta and joined 22squared
as an Associate Creative Director. Curt has created work for clients with annual
billings as low as $5,000 and as high as $750 million. His work has been honored
by The One Show, Communication Arts, D&AD, and Effies, among others. Curt’s
brand experience includes the Atlanta Brewing Company, AT&T, Baskin-
Robbins, Capital One, the Costa Rica Tourism Board, Delta Air Lines, IBM,
Mizuno, and Lincoln Financial Group.
