A Celebration of Black History Month, Part 3: Gail Anderson

This February, we have been shining a light on a group of influential Black designers from the past and present and exploring how their work has informed and continues to inspire the greater design community.

Our third and final highlight of the month is the stamp design work of Gail Anderson. Anderson collaborated with the USPS and Hatch Show Print to create the design for the Emancipation Proclamation Stamp in 2013. She worked primarily alongside Antonio Alcala (the art director at USPS) and Jim Sherraden (master printer Hatch Show Print).

Gail Anderson is a New York based designer, writer, and educator. She is a creative director at Visual Arts Press at the School of Visual Arts. She has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian, of which she was the first African American recipient for the robust body of work she has completed throughout her career. She also received an AIGA medal in 2008. She has co-authored 15 books with Steven Heller. She also has her own design agency – Anderson Newton Design – co-founded with Joe Newton.
