Member Spotlight: Matthew Thayer, AIGA Maine President

This month’s Member Spotlight features Matt Thayer, President of AIGA Maine. We talked to him about work, his life in Maine, and his experience with AIGA.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your work.
I am a designer and art director in the marketing communications group at WEX. Prior to that, I held a similar role at CVS Health and am a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology. I enjoy working in a wide range of media, including print, web, email, and illustration. I pride myself on my ability to translate complex marketing goals and messages into clear, well-designed, persuasive communications that impact audiences and improve results.

I moved to the Portland area from Massachusetts a few years ago and love living in Maine. When I’m not hard at work, I’m often hammering down the road on my bike, hiking in the woods or playing fetch with my dog at the beach.

What brought you to Maine and how long have you lived here?
Maine has been an important part of my life for a long time – since well before I ever lived here. I visited every summer for about twenty years before moving here. I love the natural beauty, especially the coast. There is also so much creativity here, not just in the design and arts communities, but in restaurants, breweries, and many other businesses. I also love the pace and rhythm of life here.

Why did you join AIGA Maine?
After moving up from Massachusetts, I was hoping it would be a good way to connect to the Maine design community, network, and make new friends.

What is one of your favorite spots in Maine?
∙ Our family’s cabin on Pleasant Lake
Acadia National Park
Downtown Portland
∙ The beaches of Ogunquit
