The Language of Fungi

by Mercedes Arnold

Artist Statement

Mycelium and fungi have been around for millions of years. In order to survive, they had to use language in the form of bioelectricity to communicate with each other. Language takes many forms, my concept visually explores how the language pathways of fungi have evolved into the many different forms of language we know today. Created in Adobe Illustrator using text and photos that have been made into illustrations, I took inspiration from photos of fungi and mycelium. These spectacular organisms communicate just like humans, albeit in a much different way. The mycelium bioelectricity language shaped an entire organism, and as a whole, human beings are one organism. We communicate with language, verbally, physically such as body language, sign language, code, we text using emojis, we use love languages. Through these various types of languages, we communicate and shape our world much like mycelium and fungi has done.
