This works title “Not Further Beyond” is graphically and linguistically represented in the poster with four “languages” (Morse code, NATO alphabet, Latin and English). Morse code is used to spell out letters of the NATO alphabet. The letters of the NATO alphabet spell out the Latin phrase, “ne plus ultra”. “Ne plus ultra” roughly translates in English to “Not further beyond”. “Not further beyond” itself is open to interpretation. Does one read it as a command to STOP!, as it is forbidden to go past a certain point. Or does one read it as the ultimate pinnacle, impossible to go any further? The black expanse at the bottom is the beyond, the space at the edge of the map wherein olden times there may have been written “here lies monsters”. Fear of the unknown, or excitement at what may be out there beyond what one knows… something to ponder.
About the Artist
I am a carpenter by day, a creative at night. I’ve made furniture, quilts, lighting, greeting cards and drawings in colored pencil. If some part of my mind can think of an idea, some other part gets excited on figuring out how to make it a reality. Why do I make things? I don’t know the answer to that other than I would be sad if I didn’t.
